Research: editing style/ film style/ music
Short films have always been an area which I have been interested
in. I watch a lot of independent film makers, mainly daily vloggers. These creators
film, edit and share there content in one day. As our time scale for this
project was short, I knew we would be filming and editing at a similar pace to
how they make movies. This worked as and advantage for creating, as watching
their content over a long period of time gave me ideas for how to shoot and set
up shots from a range of angles. As well as this it also aided me when I was
editing, using quick cuts of short clips to keep the audience’s attention. The main
film makers I got inspiration from where Casey Neistat and Austin Augie, both
daily vloggers with massive audiences of YouTube.
Initially we were inspired by mockumentaries. Tv series such as
the office and trailer park boys take everyday surroundings and manage to create
gripping and hilarious film. We wanted to do a similar thing with our short
film, taking the studio and student environment and create something comical whilst
also having a clear message.
Our film will focus on two characters, each with a different
approach to submitting their work. Due to this, the music aspect was key to
creating completely different atmosphere for each of the characters. Knowing this
we thought it would be good to have to different genres of music to represent
the organisation and preparation level of the different characters. We knew we
wanted an up beat, jolly and relaxed song for the organised relaxed student. Contrasting
with an intense song that builds up. The jolly music was easy to come across
using YouTube to find a laid back upbeat instrumental. The intense music was
more challenging to find. We looked at film theme songs, and whittled it down
to music from the movie ‘I am Legend’ and ‘Inception’. Both using dramatic
build up music.
