Ligatures 1 OUGD403

OUGD403:

In this brief I was asked to design and develop a new character in response to a pre identified problem. This work was completed in pairs, giving me the opportunity to work collaboratively for the first time on my course. We started off by looking through social media and conversations to try and find a word that could be turned into a ligature.

Making writing the word or expression a lot easier to communicate. We tried to approach the project from a range of angles. We looked at using words to represent actions, such as high fiving, spudding, hugging etc. from this we sketched out symbols that could possibly represent these actions the best. We both found this concept to simple and not a challenge.

We then went on to look at combining an exclamation and question mark, which me and my partner both agreed applied to us. Unfortunately, after researching into this idea we found out that this had already been done.

We decided to look at the phrase squad, which we both associate with the meaning of a group of friends. We generated some visual ideas through the experimentation of manipulating the letter forms in squad. Although we created some aesthetic ligatures, there was no idea behind the imagery.
